Why Powering Iraq?
Iraq is emerging from the challenges faced over the past few years. The country is ready for business with extensive opportunities for investment in the power and electrical sector. The country has an untapped potential with a youthful population as the economy is expected to grow substantially over the coming years. Powering Iraq is the only conference, held in the local market, focusing on the investment opportunities within the power and electrical sector.
Iraq is infamous for its substantial oil reserves and business opportunities within infrastructure, construction, agriculture and many other sectors. The electricity sector, however, suffers from a series of challenges, which feeds into all industries.
Years of neglect have led to a dilapidated grid infrastructure with low operational efficiency and high levels of losses. Over 50% of electricity generated is lost in transmission and distribution. The Government of Iraq has made significant progress in restoring power generation over the past decade, however, substantial investment and upgrades are vital. New generation units have been installed, but their ability to operate efficiently is hampered by lack of alternate supply, for example water generation, whilst the cost of production is high. Investment is required across the entire power sector.
